Lucy Allen decided to volunteer at her local St Luke’s Hospice shop in Northwich whilst studying for her A-levels at Sir John Deane’s College.
“I have been helping for around 12 months on a Saturday morning. The staff are very friendly and have made me feel very welcome.
“I am working towards my Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award so the hours will help me achieve it but I also like the thought of helping to make a difference; I wasn’t able to help in the Hospice due to my age but I was keen to help a local charity, one that supports local people in my community and this is the best way I can do that.
“I help with sorting donations, use the till, dress the window and other displays in the shop as well as greeting and helping customers.”
Lucy would certainly encourage others her age to look into volunteering: “It provides a great opportunity for young people to get something on your CV and to boost your confidence. It gives you the chance to meet new people and do something useful – and it makes you feel good about yourself!”
