Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the difficult decision was taken back in March 2020 by the Hospice to temporarily stop visiting the people we befriend.
Instead it was agreed each volunteer Befriender would keep in touch with the person they befriend by chatting over the telephone – for some this developed to WhatsApp and FaceTime, as this has the added bonus of being able to see one another, allowing them to share a virtual cup of tea together!
We have continued to make new matches between patients and Volunteer Befrienders. Anybody who has been referred to the Befriending Service since March 2020 has been offered a Volunteer Telephone Befriender. Their Telephone Befriender will call them once or twice a week for a friendly chat.
If you feel a Telephone Befriender may be something you would benefit from please click here to find out about the criteria and referrals process for the Befriending Service.
The Befriending Service is lucky enough to have a large team of volunteer Befrienders, allowing us to match new patients quite quickly, so for the foreseeable future we are not going to be recruiting new volunteer Befrienders.
If you would like to discuss anything to do with the Befriending Service please feel free to call Catherine Holligan on 07496073430 , leave a message and she will call you back (though this may not be on the same day- Catherine’s working days are Monday and Tuesday).
