When we look back at the old box of family photos, we can all reminisce about times past. However, one of the things that people really miss is the sound of a loved one’s voice.
Recording memories is a free service available from St Luke’s to help and support people who want to record their life experiences and memories onto a CD.
Everybody has cherished moments and we can help you make an audio recording of your memories. Whether reliving major personal events or recalling everyday life most people find telling their unique story interesting and want to place it on record.
How does the service work?
A trained St Luke’s volunteer will guide you through an informal talk where you’ll be prompted to recall your life experiences in your own time. Your memories will be recorded on a digital audio recorder.
What happens after?
You’ll be asked to sign a consent form after your recording giving us permission to keep a copy of it and to make copies for your family and friends if you wish. You can say on the form if you would like to place any restrictions on how your recording is stored and shared. Your recording will then be transferred to a CD and you’ll be given a copy.
Where will the interview take place?
The interview can take place in your home or in a quiet room at St Luke’s at a time to suit you.
What if I don’t have much to say?
Our volunteers are trained to help you remember your life, and often people find they are able to recall more than they thought. You’re welcome to bring photographs or other items along as these can help to stimulate memories.
How long do the sessions last?
It varies from person to person, but they can be as long or as short as you wish. The volunteer has plenty of time and during the recording, you can take frequent breaks if you need to, or arrange to continue another time.
What if there are things I don’t want to talk about?
You choose what you want to talk about, so you don’t have to talk about anything you don’t want to.
What if I get upset?
Some people find recording memories difficult, or they think about illness. Our volunteers understand this and are experienced at talking to people in this situation. We’ll understand if you want to take a break during the session, or would like to stop. We’ll also be able to put you in touch with sources of support if you wish.
What will happen to my information?
Afterwards, your recording will be stored securely at St Luke’s Hospice. There’s an option on the consent form to give permission for your recording to be used as a future resource for possible use in research, teaching, publication and websites. Your personal information will remain confidential.
Can I have more than one CD?
Yes, you can have as many copies of the CD as you like. Your family and friends can also ask for copies if you’ve given us permission to pass copies on. We don’t charge for copies, although you’re welcome to make a donation.
