There are many benefits to being a St Luke’s volunteer, building confidence, learning new skills, making new friends or sharing knowledge with others. For Chris Wych he wanted to simply give back to his local Hospice.

Chris 73, from Winsford has spent the past five years generously volunteering and fundraising for St Luke’s. From stewarding at the Midnight Walk to donning sparkles, glitter and fake tan at Strictly Learn to Dance 2013, took part in the Santa Dash. But Chris is well known at St Luke’s for replenishing the confectionary stock for the Hospice tuck shop which is available to everyone who visits.

Retired Headteacher Chris said “My wife Beryl volunteered as a patient driver but I became involved when I was asked by Claire Langston, who works at St Luke’s if I’d like to volunteer by stocking up the tuck shop.”

Chris added “I was really intrigued about volunteering at the Hospice and I’m really glad I did. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming, I really enjoy spending my time here. It’s an absolute pleasure to do what I can.”

When I first came to St Luke’s I was a little apprehensive, I thought it might be a sombre place but it’s not like that at all and I’ve been amazed. Everyone smiles and says hello, the Hospice has got that warm atmosphere that everybody who walks in for the first time must appreciate because you can really feel it.”

Chris added “I get the feel good factor when I’m volunteering and it really does make you feel like you’re spending your time in a very positive way.”

Riana Martin Volunteer Co-Ordinator said “Chris is an exceptional character, his dedication to coming in each week has helped raised over £4,000 for St Luke’s, and the tuck shop is extremely popular amongst staff, patients, relatives and volunteers. On behalf of everyone at the Hospice I would like to say thank you to Chris for his dedication.”

St Luke’s Hospice needs to raise over £8,600 a day to ensure vital care and services can be provided to people in mid and south Cheshire.
